Move Scratch disk from internal to external.

I know this is dangerous and time consuming but I need to make more space.

Set up details in signature.

I now have the external HD. I would like to move all the captured video from the internal to the external. I know it is messy but how do I do it.

First post and I did a search but didn't find the exact protocol in the results. If you can post a link that helps too.

Actually it's incredibly easy. I had to do it because my computer wouldn't capture to my external hd properly so I had to capture internally and then move. You just move the files to the capture scratch on your hd. When you open fcp you will notice that your bins have a slash through them or are red... I can't remember. At that point, you use the reconnect media option and you point it to the new location on the external hd. You should only need to do it for one file and it will find all of the other ones based on this. I suppose the only way it would be messy is if you were doing it with tons of projects. I was only doing it for one.

Yep, just drag the files to the external. You should have a capture scratch folder (or maybe a bunch depending on if you have changed your scratch disk). Just darg it and, as markyf said, you should get a prompt when you open a project that the files are missing. Just choose the reconnect or search options, and track them down. If they are all in the same folder it shouldn't take too long.

I moved everything over and freed up some space on the internal. I only have one problem now. As I launch FCP I get "Searching for Movie Data File..." It will locate 3 different files eventually but slows the load time. The 3 files have some Soundtrack modification files so that may have something to do with it. Google search came up with limited ideas. Any way to get rid of this slow start?

Somehow it's fixed. I deleted .stap files and launched Soundtrack pro and the search no longer runs.

i change my scratch disk with every project. i create a folder for the project on whatever drive i am working on and set that folder as my scratch disk. all footage gets captured there. render files there. project file and imported assets there. all there. so much better organization-wise. when it comes time to give the data to my client, i drag one folder that contains everything and don't have to search everywhere for it. this also simplifies things on the other end. much easier for another editor to open up the project.

i worked with pro tools for years before getting into video and this is how it organizes your sessions. very clean. apple should adopt this method.

I've been doing exactly what Cheezweezl recommends and it's a great method.

As he mentioned, you simply end up working within one folder and it's so easy to drag that one folder onto another drive for whatever reason.

Note: Just remember to create the new project folder even before launching FCP and setting everything within that folder: scratch disks, render files, etc..
