Anyone care to suggest a good .mov to .avi converter tool?

It depends on the codec used within the container. If you're trying to do a .mov with DV inside, you can use QuickTime Pro, and select the "Movie to AVI" option, then select the DV codec.

If you're trying to do a more compressed codec from .mov into AVI, you're probably in for a bit more trouble.
