Mouth wired Shut

sorry if this is in the wrong spot but i am shooting a short soon and it requires the main character to have his mouth wired shut and i was wondering if any of you guys had any ideas on how to accomplish this, i only need it for one shot, or if there are any other ways i can write a way for him not to be able to talk without having his mouth wired shut.

How do you imagine it wired shut?

We don't know your script or circumstances. Like he could be bound and gagged, or have his tongue cut out, or maybe he has some serious laryngitides.

You haven't given us any context.
 
This should probably be asked in the After Effects forum (as stated above) but... my advice would be to do such an effect practically. It depends on what you mean by wired, but if I can assume you mean the classic "sewn" shut with metal wiring, then essentially you would probably use some real metal wire and some strong fx adhesive (probably stronger than spirit gum) to stick it to their skin. I could also recommend making small extentions of their flesh right above and below the lips with some morticians/derma wax and then actually threading the metal wiring through those parts. The procedure would go something like this

1. Roll two moderately thin strips of derma wax
2. Apply spirit gum right above and below talent's lips
3. Apply roll of derma wax above and below lips...
4. Use some moisterizer to soften transition into skin and lips
5. Use red/pink cream based make up on edges of wax to make transition to lips less apparent.
6. Physically thread metal wiring through the rolls of wax just as you would have the lips if the effect were real (make sure the wax is sufficiently stuck to the person's face first)
7. Use cue tip or small utensil to make holes redder and maybe a little green/brown for infection.
8. Small shaping tool to add some ridges to individual holes
9. Add brown/red around lips for aggravated, infected look
10. Add tiny amount of blood to individual holes for dramatic effect...

Thats the best procedure I can think of. I've just started this fx stuff myself (making a zombie short soon) so I've been doing some research. However, I don't think derma wax is eatable... in fact, most sfx make up supplies aren't eatable, so I'd be careful about getting too close to the mouth or nostrils. Anyway, hope that helps! :D
 
sorry i will specify more. this isnt a horror shot. by wired shut i envision it more along the lines of after someone gets their jaw broken. it almost looks like braces but designed to keep the jaw in place. hope this makes it more clear.
