Mounting the MixPre

I know this is the noobiest noob question that ever noobed, but I have no idea how I'm gonna attach the MixPre to my rig when I'm one-man-banding it. I was hoping it would have 1/4" sockets so I could put it on a cheeseplate, but alas...

Edit : Huzzah! Problem solved!!

One option, instead of mounting, it to put it in an audio bag and wear it in a harness. Like what I'm doing with my Sound Devices 302 in my avatar picture.

I guess it depends on how pro you need it to look, and whether or not you are willing to modify it. I was thinking that if your camera uses a quick release tripod system, it would be awesome to mount the part that normally goes on a tripod onto the top of the preamp, and then if you want to attach it to just the camera, it clips onto the bottom. I don't know how you would do this without making some permanent modifications.

If you are mounting it to a shoulder rig, than maybe some velcro straps to secure it to the rods?

Somebody out there makes a cage like device for mounting accessories between a tripod head and camera baseplate but I don't remember the maker. Chadfish had his Mixpre housing modified to do that. If you want to go that route, might search his posts. Fwiw, I have see a pro wrap the straps of his sound bag around the base of the head so that the mixer controls were close to the head. I have used spring clamps to clamp mine on a tripod leg with a few velcro ties for cable management and it worked fine for a static dialog shot. Forget about how it looks, question is how secure is it and how usable or cumbersome is it.

We do (K-Tek). www.norbertusa.com.

It's called Norbert, and it's a frame that allows the user to mount pretty much whatever they want on it, as long as it has a shoe mount, a camera thread, or a mic thread. We do have mounting accessories that allow the users to mount things like wireless recievers, and many other things. Check out the website to see if that's something that might work for mounting stuff on a camera.

It's Greg Winter that does a mod for the MixPre. He pts a plate on the bottom of it that you can screw in a mounting plate for a tripod head. Also a hole on the top. The problem is you have to take the extruded metel casing off to attach it to your camera - many screws that start to strip avter multiple uses. I had it perminantly mounted to me VX2100.

That mod was 150.00

Here is an aluminum casing for it:

I dont know if he actually makes them any more. Contact him and see. I too am looking for something to mount my MixPre to a bracket. Ya know, maybe just the aluminum plate on the bottom would be enough. You mount a plate to it like a manfrotto thing. Then you can mount/unmount it like a camera on a tripod.

THis would screw into the aluminum plate Greg puts on the bottom of your Mixpre. I bet he's do that for cheaper than the full mod. http://www.manfrotto.com/product/83...ect_Adapter_With_Sliding_Mounting_Plate_357Pl

That does look cool for a smaller/lighter setup, but with my full rig I need to be able to mount it on 15mm LW rails.

If anybody has a better idea than gaff taping it to a cheeseplate (though it seems to be holding for the moment lol), I'd love to hear it.

Lee I don't really see how you mounted it with that gear. It would be nice if you shared your solution completely, as others also would like to mount a MixPre.

Years ago I had Greg Winter mod my MixPre so it could connect between the camera and tripod. It was a pain to attach to a camera though because you had to remove the extruded aluminum housing of the MixPre every time you take it off the camera, HOWEVER if you just want to mount it to a bracket this mod works great.
It requires 8 holes drilled into the MixPre housing, and an aluminum plate with matching 8 holes drilled. Then just ad a Manfrotto Quick Release Adapter. Winning!

But I bet also if you just took a metal plate with the Quick Release plate attached, then used Velcro for the MixPre attachment, you'd have a decent mount as well with no MixPre hole drilling. I dig mine though, as it's so solid.

PS Here is the quick release I used: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...maging_357_357_Pro_Quick_Release.html#reviews

Replace "QR plate" with "rail clamp" and that's all my solution is. Definitely not as robust as yours, but it's surprisingly solid: I had to use some pretty serious force to take it apart to take these photos (plus one of the whole rig for reference):

Thanks! I'm gonna try to add a front view sometime this weekend so stay tuned!

One thing I can't figure out about your MixPre mount: why do you need the aluminum plate? Looks like the QR plate would screw right into the MixPre.

It adds sturdiness. When I had it between my head and my VX2100 there was a lot of pressure on it. It may bend the MixPre casing.
