Mounting Sound Devices 302 camera rig

I'm about to pull the trigger on a SD 302 but I can't find out if it has a mounting screw on the bottom. Obviously if it does then that is how to mount it.

Otherwise, I'm interested to know what is the best way to mount it?

The 302 has no mounting screws which is a shame. High quality Velcro works fine for mounting. If you can live with two channels, you might think about the MixPreD which does have mounting bosses.

Thanks Grant, No mounting screw is a shame. I've been trying to make up my mind for weeks but I've plumed for the 3 channels knowing I would regret 2 - I've had a suggestion to use a super clamp which I think might also work. I have used velcro in the past without any problems but I like everything on the rig to be as bomb proof as possible.

The heavy duty Velcro I use, with a 1" sq on each corner, is so strong that it is difficult to remove the device. I love superclamps but I'm not so sure I'd trust that on the 302 sheet metal chassis; they will flex a bit. There was discussion some time back about installing mounting bosses in the 302 chassis. You could remove the cover and see how much space there is on the interior. That sounds a bit scary, but if you measure carefully, is very doable. Think something like a very small baby plate with the screws pointing out so the only thing on the chassis interior would be something like a #10 pan head.

When the 302 came out nobody was trying to mount them to camera rigs, that's why it doesn't have the threaded hole.

When the next version of the 302 including a recorder arrives, it'll have a mounting arrangement. I wish.

Cheers.

People have been bugging them to do this since the 552 came out. They just announced the 664 at IBC, which is pretty cool, but overkill for most of the lower budget folks.

Hanging from a strap isn't mounting its hanging - maybe your right - a 302 might just be a tad too much to mount. I just know three inputs is perfect for me, in this case three is more that twice as good as two (Mixpre - D).

It is a real pity SD they don't make the 302 with a recorder. The 664 - regardless of price - is too much mixer for me. I need 3 - not 2 - not 4 - just 3.

Fostex seem to have taken up the challenge with the DC-R302 but it seems, from this forum at least, that not many people have tried it out and the feedback is patchy.

But that is all shopping after I've shopped. The challenge is to mount my 302.

I'm currently testing Sugru. This is the coolest ever stuff for hacking .

I'm currently doing some experiments. I will post the outcome if there is one.

What is Sugru? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugru

If its a disaster I'll collect all the mixer bits, put them in a bag and hang 'm high.

When shooting off a tripod, I have a little shelf mounted on a magic arm on the tripod. I Velcro the 302 to the shelf As well as wireless receivers when needed. Works great.
