I know there have been a few threads about this, but I'm a little surprised none have mentioned what I'm worried about with this, so I wonder if perhaps I'm doing it wrong...
I have a Halo Rig that I use with both an HMC-150 and a 5DMKII. It works great for handheld, but I want to be able to mount a quick-release plate to the bottom so it'll slide on and off my 701HDV head.
The construction of the rig is: there's a threaded hole in the base that you use to attach the quick-release base the camera itself attaches to. There's an included shouldered thumbscrew that passes through the hole and screws into the quick-release base. For handheld use this is all you need.
For mounting the whole shebang to a tripod, the thumbscrew itself has a threaded hole. But this is where I get lost. The thumbscrew itself is about an inch wide. Screwing the quick-release plate from my 701HDV to this seems shockingly unstable - because the screw itself is about an inch across, this means the entirety of the contact surface between the plate and the rig is just that one inch. Worse, because the 701HDV's plate is padded with a little rubber, no matter how tightly I screw it down there's some 'wiggle' in there that makes the whole rig shaky. Between that and the small size of the contact area it feels like if I tried to maneuver the camera using the rig while it's mounted would make the whole thing flex and likely shear off the screw pretty quick. Even not using the rig to adjust the camera position I don't think would be enough, since the camera shakes and bobs on the mount when attached like that.
I can shoot some pics/video of what I'm talking about, but I suspect someone has already found a good way to address this. One thought is a screw with a taller shoulder, one that would let me go up through the HDV's plate, through the halo rig, and up into the mounting base above, sandwiching it all together with a much larger contact area. But I have no idea where i'd buy such a screw, or if it'd even be a good idea.
Anyone got any ideas?
