mounting a camera in a car for external car shots

you know those shots where you see a camera moving along a road and then another car (the char with the characters) comes from off screen, onto the screen, then goes off on the other side of the screen? (a sort of camera hyper-dolly when on the road, and the "character-car" passes by the camera)

how would i go about shooting a shot like that on an extremely low budget and still get a good shot?

I think you'd use a regular camera car mount on the 'dolly' car (for lack of a better term.) But instead of pointing the camera to the inside of the car, as you normally would with a car mount, you'd point it the other way. I'm sure there are also rigs made to mount a camera inside a car, but I don't know about them.

The 'cheap' way might be to put sandbags on the hood of the car. Cradle your camera on them, and strap it down REALLY GOOD with bungees and/or ratchet straps. Run a cable to a monitor inside the car so you can see what you're getting.

Good luck!
