Mount St. Helens

Re: Mount St. Helens

I work at NBC and we've been getting constant live feeds of this baby.. awsome stuff

Re: Mount St. Helens

I plan on heading out there this weekend as well to see if I can get some good footage. I don't know how close they'll let you get right now, but maybe I can sneek up there.

Reminds me of the time, about 10 years ago, when I was a young Captain stationed in Hawaii. During a lull in a training exercise, at PTA (Pohakalua Training Area) on the Big Island, four of us went down to the Kilauea Volcano National Park. At the time, there was an active vent of flowing lava spilling into the ocean. The National Park Service roped off a viewing area far far far away from the lava spectacle. Being cocky and extremely foolish, we went underneath the rope and walked out to the lava. While the sergeants quit half way out there, another officer and I got to within approximately 10 or 15 feet of this crawling blackish red ooze. The heat was intense. After a minute, we realized how incredibly stupid we were and headed back to the rope area where two park rangers were waiting for us. They threatened us with a $200 fine, but because we were military let us go with a warning and reminding us how foolish we were. They were right, but the brief experience was a once in lifetime moment. I would never do it again though.

Just be careful scharky. I own a house in Olympia so I am very familiar with the area. Volcanoes are amazing to look at, but extremely dangerous - so don't get too close!

Re: Mount St. Helens

Yeah, my wife probably wouldn't appreciate me getting myself blown up or asphyxiated. I will probably just wimp out anyway and abide by the law :)
If I get some good footage I'll post it for you all, hopefully nothing of my running for my life as hot lava is kissing my toes.

Re: Mount St. Helens

Yeah, that molten lava gets pretty damn hot... get within only a few feet and the heat will kill you... anybody remember what happened last time mount St. Helen erupted? Big explosion? several people died I believe... something like that... the power of several nuclear bombs... super heated clouds of gas flowing down the side of the mountain....

Re: Mount St. Helens

I believe that type of volcanic event is referred to as a pyroclastic explosion.
