Moulin Rouge

It was pretty strange the first time I caught it, having just walked in while it was on. Overall, yeah, I liked it for the imagery more than the story, but the way they weaved it together was well done. They tried to do the same thing with Knights Tale, but the story was what I enjoyed most.

The film is OK. It's a good story, but Baz is a bit too eccentric of a filmmaker for me. The whole speed up, slow down framerate thing just annoyed me and didn't add to the film in my opinion.

One of my favorite directors, Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorite movies. Tho, I've only seen parts of moulin rouge, from what I've seen, the imagery is amazing.

Tho its hard for a guy to tell his non-film friends that movies like this are cool.

This is actually one of the only musicals I like (that and the Newsies... I can't believe I admitted that).

The visuals of Moulin Rouge are great. I really like the use of models and how they would zoom out of a room, fly across some models, and then zoom into another room. I do admit the speed up and slow down, bugs a little at points but it does add to the style of the movie.

Or it could be that after everybody got over the STYLE, they couldn't find any SUBSTANCE.

I'd say it's underrated... not only did the visuals strike me, but the storytelling was fantastic IMHO.

What story telling? It was a "standard" tragic love story, way too melodramatic.

The biggest problem is Luhrmann is all about style, a complete relentless assault of his style. Thank god he has only made 2 films in the last ten years. Everything becomes so false and overdone that the story lost all meaning and everyone becomes a caricature.

However, back in 2001, this kind of relentless stylized attack on the audience was not seen as often as it is today. That is why I think it was so popular back then and nobody talks about it today.

No, I think severely underrated as well. Especially considering what followed... I was really shocked when, a few years later, the tepid and unimaginative "Chicago" was said to have reinvented and revived the movie musical; and again ticked this year when Dreamgirls won oscars for sound mixing and editing when the sound was so atrocious. Moulin Rouge really broke some new ground in the musical genre, was quite unique, and really blended seamlessly all the elements of drama, song, and dance (unlike %$&$&% Dreamgirls "OK, I'm gonna sing one line now - switch the mix to pristine studio song mode"). The songs in Moulin Rouge really were brilliant pastiches of familiar songs that managed to sneak up on you, surprise you, and bring in whole worlds of reference very effectively.

As for stirytelling... it worked well for me. Was it melodramatic? Sure, wasn't it supposed to be? Was it style over substance... I'd say no. Sure, it was highly stylized, and I'd say GREAT for that, but there was a lot of depth and substance, especially that brought in through the musical references.

The only thing it broke, was my heart, when some @$$hat decided to sell the rights to use a Nirvana song in the movie. :crybaby:

I think it's a fantastic film. The entire film (as I saw it) is a caricature of a melodramatic story, which kinda makes all the melodrama the point.

Its one of my top three favourite movies, up there with Wong Kar Wai's "In The Mood For Love" and "Life is Beautiful" , from Begnini.

Excelent direction, I really love the slow motion- Which is not smooth, but direct slowmo from 25p. It adds a sense of drama to it.

Excelent performances, and fantastic script.

The over-the-top nature of the film is a tribute to film (like Melies), and also a tribute to "love"- the same goes to the music in the film. "Love lifts us up where we belong", or "Do you think people would've had enough of silly love songs?". All these music are a methaphor for the whole movie, and a great tribute to a romantic perspective of life. Love is silly, undescribable, intense, expressive. And this movie portraits it incredibly well.

Loved it. (I'm a romantic guy, yes :) - not gay, incredibly enough.)
