This is a slight repost from down in another thread, but I just wanted to inject the MOTU Traveler http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/traveler/ into our audio conversation and see what you more field-production-audio types think of it as a field unit (and, of course, as a dual use field mixer/computer interface). Standalone, it can run on battery power, sync to SMPTE, provides 4 preamps, 8 analog ins total, 12 digital ins, an 8-bus mixer, and 22 outputs (analog and digital)... plus of course headphone monitoring and decent metering.
The MOTU Ultralight is similar but smaller, fewer inputs (8 analog with 2 preamps / 2 SPDIF), and doesn't seem to be quite as simple for battery powering... but still a good candidate...
