Motorizing a very small dolly...

has anyone ever played with making a small dolly motorized so you can control its movement up and down the track?

i have a really small dolly 12inches x 12inches and it would be great to have a wired remote to control its movement.

if it were variable speed with a joystick or something that would be a huge plus.

the dolly+camera can't weight more than 20 pounds so a small quiet dc motor sounds to be the thing.

i don't know anything about motors. i know it needs to be quiet and very low vibration.

just a nice touch to dolly shots.

No. Never tried it. Maybe you could use this one as a template for making your own though. . .

i had seen a site that demonstrated an amazing one, it was both manual with great speed sensitivity and you could also program it to get the same thing every single time.

i can't find the link but i have enough of an idea.

dc motor mated to just one of the rollerblade wheels.

just need to figure out more about the speed sensitivity. don't want something that is a fixed speed.

i'll be doing a lot of research and prototype bulding with a friend who loves to build anything electronic or metal.

this probably won't help much,but...
a couple of years ago a friend of mine was really psyched because he met this military guy who
had this thing that looked like a three-wheel Fisher dolly with all the hydraulic components.

Have no idea if they ever did anything with it.. But, military parts/surplus/people might be able
to help you out if you're looking for super expensive kind of stuff for really cheap..

Yeah--so, that's my story. Hope this helps.

hmm.

that is an idea, i have never looked at those battery ones closely.

thanks.

i'm also going to check out the higher end rc car stuff. some of those have decent sized motors i think...
