motion weirdness when transcoding w/ Encore

Hi there. Maybe somebody has a suggestion for me.

I have a finished edited file, NTSC DV 16x9 (24p advanced), 1.2 PAR AVI

When transcoding this file in Encore, 7MB 2 Pass, interlaced lower field first, I get weird edge jaggies associated with motion.
If I de-interlace it's actually worse.

Everything looks good in the file so I really think it's happening in the transcode step.

I'm out of ideas - anybody?

what type of "motion crap"?

Ok, I think I've figured out the problem, just not sure how to fix it.

I believe what's happening is a result of changing pixel aspect ratio from square to 1.2 in the render stage. I'm trying to render my edit, which was shot on a D90 (square pixels) down to a DV Widescreen file (PAR1.2) - to maintain the 16x9 frame - and that gives me lines and bumps on all edges associated with motion (stills look fine but this is a "motion picture" after all).

I'm going to need to change this into DV at some point to get it on to a DVD. I tried exporting with square pixels uncompressed but then I had audio synch issues with the rendered file.

So there's the problem - get my edit out of the time line and onto a DVD without motion related artifacts and perfect audio synch.

you did what! O.o

okay, export your project using MPEG2 using the DVD preset.

When you import it inot Encore, it wont need to transcode.

now, your master. keep square pixels and try using H.264, use exactly the same settings as your project settings, this should match your footage settings.

Not sure what you're looking at when you say "lines and bumps." Could be an interlacing thing? It would be helpful if you posted screenshots or footage.

BUT . . . f you're doing ANY resizing at all (up OR down res), don't use Premiere or Encore. The resizing algorithm Adobe uses stinks to high heaven. What I do is output a lossless Lagarith AVI in the original resolution so Adobe does no resampling. Then I open it in VirtualDub and use the "resample" filter, and specify your final dimensions. Make sure you choose "Lanczos" as your resampling algorithm.

Re-export from VirtualDub (again as Lagarith) and then transcode in Encore or transcoder of your choosing.

Thanks guys for your help. I'll definitely try out Vitrualdub.

I've never really worked in square pixels before. To be honest, I didn't realize just how much I didn't know. I'm supposed to screen this project in a week and was beginning to panic that I may have f-ed myself somewhere along the line.

From Premiere I rendered the file out to 720x405, PAR 1.0, 4:2:2, 8 bit UYVY AVI (I know Galleddrim said never use Premiere for scaling but I hadn't read that post before I did this). I didn't choose that compressor because it was particularly awesome, I picked it because it worked. I dropped that into Encore and it seems to be OK.
Goddammit, this has been a draining experience.

I have a similar problem with encore. when I burn my project onto a dvd it seems slower than the footage file. Even when I just have it as a project it wasn't this slow... is there something I'm missing?
