Motion tracking problem. This drives me mad.

Whenever I do a motion track on layer-1 and then apply it to layer-2, layer-2 is automatically repositioned (re-centered) so that the new center is the location of the point being tracked. In other words, it recenters layer-2 onto the traking point. Meanwhile all I want if for layer-2 to move relative to layer-1, and I don't want it to be repositioned. How do I shut off this automatic repositioning?

Change your anchor point of layer 2. The motion tracker is essentially modifying the position of layer 2, based on its anchor point. If you move the anchor point, the layer will shift where the tracker is pinned to.

How do I move the anchor point? What is the anchor point? What is the exact procedure? Thank you.

Select the layer. Push A.

The anchor point is like the center of the object. Transformations like motion track can only be applied to a point, not a 2d shape. The Anchor point is that point.

Can you be specific. When I push A I see the Anchor Point reference but I don't know what to do from here. Once again, my tracking point is at the upper right corner of the screen, and I don't want the layer of the scene being moved to be centered onto the tracking point. How do I do that?

I figured it out. One has to move the numbers in the "Anchor Point" setting in the "transformation" options of layer B. Thank you.

A good method for motion tracking is to apply your track data to a null object, then parent the thing you want tracked to the null.

Not an AE user but also by experience I've learned never to animate an object directly. Always place it under a null and animate the null(and even child nulls if needed).
Too long to explain why but yes I would say that's good practice.
