Motion Track gets blurry when zooming

Hey All,

I’ve got some layered images, some of which have text as an alpha’d graphic in png format. I’m trying to move them around the screen and had noticed the text seemed a little blurry as I zoomed in on it. So I up-res’d the images and thought that would solve my problem. Instead, it revealed something that seems like a bug.

My text graphics are large now (1500 x 2100) and when I zoom into on a section using the pan/crop tool they look great. However, I want to use the motion track to move these around as it’s much more convenient. The problem is that when I use the motion track to zoom in on these, they don’t look near as good as the pan / cropped zooming. Is this a bug? Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to do this?

I tried that and it didn't seem to make any difference. However, I didn't switch it off on the parent track...maybe that's the problem! I'll give that a try. Thanks!

Yes it does. That's why you shouldn't use it for zooming. Track Motion does NOT use the full resolution of the image. However, Pan/Crop DOES use the full resolution. Use Pan/Crop for zooming instead and you'll be much happier.

Whoa...if that is so, that really bites. I'm using a parent track to manage moving 10+ layers of other tracks with various transparent parts. Doing all that with pan / crop would be a major pain. Ouch!

Mark:

Nest the composite project into the timeline of a new project and apply the pan/crop to the now single media event. Or render out the composite clip and bring it into a new project as a new clip. This what you would do if you were doing compositing or FX in say Adobe After Effects.

That was it! I changed the scene to use pan/crop and everything got nice and crisp. That was somewhat painful, but it works.

So why do motion tracks trash the image resolution? That seems like a bug or at least a less than good implementation of the feature, doesn't it?

Track Motion works with the video frame. So (with SD NTSC) you're starting at 720x480 and then zooming in. With Pan/Crop, you start with your source media size and then zoom in converting down to 720x480 afterwards. It's not a bug - just how it works.

Yea, it's just unfortunate as it makes using motion tracks not very useable for anything other than images at size or less. It sure would be a whole lot more useable if it didn't do that :(
