So when I am editing and I go to motion or sountrack(and stay in that program without switching back and forth) it works great, but if I go back to final cut and then back to another of the studios software motion or sountrack freeze. All the time pretty much....

Why is this...

I have the latest drivers for OSX and FCP studio..

Hopefully one of you have experienced the same and know why

System:

G5 Quad
6.5 GB ram (good stuff - Kinston)
OS 10.4.6
4.5 TB raid system running on a eSATA multiplier card
Kona LHe HD video card

i have a powerbook g4 1.5ghz with only a gig of ram ...
I can run FCP and Motion at the sme time withour either freezing up.
Did you try a reinstall?

Yeah, maybe you should do a complete reformat and reinstall. Working for me on about 5 Macs....

Also, check your memory by doing a memory test (can search on how to do this).

Trash your FCP prefs, run MacJanitor, run Disk Utility. As a former IT engineer, on Macs I find reinstalling the OS a total waste of time.

Wow! That's a kick butt system! But I think FCP might have a memory ceiling of 4 gig's. Do a search at Apple on that cause I could be wrong.

Check that...FCP has a sweet spot of 2.5, can use up to 4 but beyond that it doesn't help but won't hinder. Run "System Profiler" to see what is being used by the OS when it freezes. System Profiler can give you a pie chart on memory, CPU and HDD use.

Yes, FCP won't use more than 4GB, but runs very nicely on 2. Also, run Disk Warrior before doing anything drastic. MacJanitor, then Disk Utility, then Disk Warrior. Also, techtools is pretty nice to have aound.
