Motion - Feathering the Edges?

Is there any way to feather the edges of a still image that is superimposed in Motion? If so, how do I do that?

Best I can find is to make a mask over your image, then feather said mask. There are Bevel filters and border filters, but they don't really seem to help.

(I'm just getting started with Motion myself... just got version 3 in the office..)
