Motion Capture Suits

Does anyone here have experience in working with motion capture suits and the cameras/computer programs along with them? I'm curious as to what the cheapest price one could pay to have a scene with an actor with a motion cap suit on just walk on from one side of the frame to the other? Thanks guys.

Here's a 'free' tool, which I can not run, because it is only for Windows. But from the description, it may be what you are looking for, in that it seems to be able to generate BVH files, which are industry standard for 'motion capture'.

For a 'person walking from one side of the frame to the other', perhaps just using the trackers that AE has, and hook your desired objects to the trackers.

I've done a little bit of work with the trackers, but it has been so infrequent, that I'd not be able to give more details.

However, I'm thinking that for the West Fest, I may be doing more... if I can get the time to build a Blender model, and then add both motion capture and match movement in the CG world...

Free tool, can't attest to quality or fitness for purpose... but given the name, it looks like something a athletic coach would use to improve athlete performance...

Here's a motion capture library of BVH files from Carnege Mellon U... Again since I don't have much experience with this sort of thing, I don't
know how well these can be used by AE. I'm going to look at them using Blender, as there is some capability to import BVH files to animate the 3-d CG characters.

I'm going to check all that out.

What about if you shoot from a camera, lets say a canon hv20 and you have an actor walk by wearing the motion capture suit but thats it, no special camera. What are the possibilites then, or would it even work right? Thanks.

I don't have a PC that can be used for testing the software, but given that the software can import 'video' and some how have the user be able to indicate what is the 'target' for the motion tracking, it seems to me the 'media' is what ever is available to the PC, at the very least, some form of AVI, and the usual codecs, I would imagine.

Motion capture only really works well with multiple cameras and trackers. You can hack it with one camera, but it requires an amount of skill or expertise that you may not have, considering you're asking the question. Also, mocap data won't work in AE. It's intended to be used in a 3D program.

The cheapest solution I've seen is SynthEyes using two of the same cameras. The manual walks you through the process and you get OK results, but it takes a good amount of time and care spent cleaning up, etc. You're better off just downloading the mocap files or using a different method altogether. If you're just looking for someone walking across the screen, there's far easier ways of accomplishing that.
