Motion 5 appears more pro than FCP X, or am I wrong?

Just my initial impressions from using Motion and FCP X since Tuesday.

In contrast to FCP X vs FCP 7, it seems like Motion 5 didn't lose any of the pro aspects of Motion 4. I see the same custom settings available and everything appears to be in the same place.

Motion 5 seems to have retained pretty much everything that existed in Motion 4.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
 
The integration between the two is phenomenal. Whole new workflow between them. Do the Ripple Training, learn what FCP X really is all about. I mean, it's only $40.
 
Hi BenB, actually I did purchase Steve Martin's course because I intend to learn FCP X. Just can't use it right now for any professional work. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Apple is listening and hopefully scrambling to bring FCP X up to speed for professional use.

I just hope I'm not deluding myself.
 
Yeah Motion 5 struck me as much more fully featured. The preferences and menus and export options and amount of tools seemed very high end. I really wish they would have retained a lot of this FCP X.

BenB is right about Motion/FCP X integration. The two really go hand in hand thanks to Motion's publishing abilities (publish effects, transitions, titles to FCP X). If you think of Motion as PART of FCP (which it really is) FCP feels quite a bit more pro. Hopefully they will bring much of this higher end control back into FCP in due time.

That said as I have played with FCP X more and more, I found the refined interface to actually be far less limiting than I initially thought it would have been. It is streamlined but actually quite powerful.
 
is the RT performance any better or more optimized in the new Motion compared to the version 4?

also, for the new Motion to be utilized the most is it abosolutely necessary to use it with FCP X vs FCP7? would it be worth buying if only planned to use with the FCP 7?

Hi David,

I can export my Motion 5 projects as Quicktime movies and bring them into FCP 7 as such. I don't know if a ".mtn" file from Motion 5 will work in FCP 7, but exported as a Quicktime movie, no problem.

RT Performance wise, I do believe it's noticeably faster to render. I must say, I'm delighted so far with Motion 5! No purchasing regrets at all there. I gave it a 5-star rating.

I heard back from Apple after registering my own complaint regarding FCP X. They seem eager to help and even ready to discuss my demand for a refund.

This really gives me reason to hope...that they are feeling the heat and are hopefully brainstorming to address the vital pro issues.

I got the refund with no problems. I got the same response saying they are working on resolving issues. I replied that a refund is the only resolution I would accept at this point and my refund was issued within the hour.
 
good to hear they actually said they are working on resolving issues and not something more along the lines of "sorry you don't like the new direction." Hopeful that Apple actually still cares about high-end pro market.

Because if Apple does ACTUALLY really care, they do make a great product, and we will likely see things remedied and a bright feature for FCP X... we'll see what happens.
 
I just installed Motion 5 and the additional content. I cannot find or load the additional content - any hints?
Does it come with any pre built templates? I see the old motion templates.
I never really used Motion 4 but thought I would give 5 a shot for 50 bucks.
 
Consider that motion was already a 64bit product in the old release, I bet it was easier to simply expand and improve the software. FCPX, on the other hand, required everything from scratch above the imovie code... which... well, explains that.
 
I'm thinking about purchasing the Motion 5 as well but don't intend to buy fcp x as of yet. Is it worth shelling out the $50 if I don't plan to edit on fcp x?

I guess it depends on what you are editing?? Motion 5 has Live Type built in. Lots of effects. It is much easier and faster than Motion 4.
I never used Motion 4 because it was so clunky. You can't go wrong for $50 bucks.
 
As long as your workflow does not include rendering .motn files directly in FCP, Motion 5 works phenomenally.
