EDIT Updated: 7/25/2007 @11:30am -

I made this a month or so ago for Fogware Publishing to show off the new software they are introducing. I was going to take a different approach, but then Motion 3 arrived so i decided my first Motion 3 project would be for this specific video.

All layers are 3D layers except for the white background which is just a 2D single layer .psd.

The music is really low because we are still waiting on the newest voice recording to come back from LA. Sound effects arent finished and im not sure i want them in there, but anyways, enjoy watching, hopefully, i had a great time making it, learned alot and just had a ton of fun!

:)

Edit- I got the voice over back and we are now ready to roll , download the .mov below to watch again with voice this time.

Great piece...I too am starting to work more and more with Motion and appreciate the time you spent getting good at this. One question...how did you manage the 3D software box effect since Motion does not support 3D models and shadows? I'm just guessing that was an imported movie from a real 3D program...

Thanks Bob and Daniel, thanks for watching and comments.

The 3D box was actually the very first thing i tried to do in Motion 3 when I got it at the office. I wanted to really get into the 3D aspect of Motion so i though i wonder. I should mention I am a software developer / multimedia specialist / DVD Author for them by trade.

What I did was pretty simple really. Just created, using PS CS3, the 4 layers i would need from the box design graphics, inside 1 PSD. Those layers being the:

Front of box
Back of box
Top/bottom of box
Sides of box

Import those layers into a single group in Motion 3, then within the group moved the layers around to shape them into the box you see in the video. Then you can edit the keyframes of the actual group itself to make it spin tilt and travel anywhere you want as a 3D box. I was thinking of building a few other things, but it might take some time. :)

I figured since its a software company, and we have a ton of software, that size , is called a mini box, preferred by ironically 'big box' retailers, so when it comes time to make a new box, you simply duplicate that Group, then replace the layers with new graphics, so no need to build another box.

I was hoping to find a place online somewhere where people were sharing 3d box and other 3d motion made objects in template files but none unfortunatly, maybe we can start one here.

I hope that helps, any questions just ask :D

Nicely done, Nic. Smooth keyframing too.

I'd been holding off on the upgrade myself (too damn lazy to do a fresh install). Now - you've given me a reason to have at it.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the great tip on making the 3D model look. Very nicely done especially adding the shadows. That's really thinking "out of the box" :-).

(But I sure wish Motion supported 3D models though so you don't have to go through that. )

oh ya. The shadows or lighting rather are done in motion by adding a light to thr layers . You can choose what groups are effected by the light.

Thanks for the comments. This post is from my iphone btw. Sitting on wall to wall traffic on 101 south

Thanks dude, the finalized project will be upped tomorrow. Posting this video made me get in gear with the boss today and get the voice finalized. Really just a shut down of communications because we are all SOO busy.

Anyways, ill update this tomorrow with the voice file.

Looks good, I like all the moves and the fluidity of it.

Just being super critical here, it might be something you may have missed because you are close to the project. When the math box on the left comes on and spins from preschool to middle school you can see on the bottom where a couple of the edges don't meet in the box. It might be something you couldn't avoid but I don't know. Again, super critical, and I only noticed because I watched it multiple times.

Oh, wow, never noticed before.

Wierd because its a duplicate of the first box. All the boxes are just command+D , but it must have been when i replaced the layers with the different box layers that it happened. Ive watched this thing 1000 times too. Thanks for pointing that out. Ill fix that and re render when i get the chance and replace the video.

Thanks again.

Thats great. Motion3 really is proving to be a big step up from last version. SO many more options before you even get to the new "3d" aspect.

There was only one tiny thing I didnt like in your clip - compared to the rest of the high quality clip - the presents font and fade out didnt work for me.
