Most used ND filter

I'm on budget. I'll start with one nd filter, which would you say is the most common (In terms of strength)?I have gh2.

If I could only have one, it would probably be a three stop, ND .9 filter. Enough to make a visible difference in DOF when used outdoors, but still usable in realistic light levels.

I rarely use NDs indoors -- usually, you either choose an aperture and light for it, which may include scrims and gels over the lights rather than the lens, or you're struggling to find enough light to make an exposure at all in an uncontrolled situation. A 0.3 density (1 stop) would be about the maximum I would ever need inside, and not too often at that. Outside, I use NDs frequently, and the 0.6 and 0.9 (2 and 3 stops, respectively) get the most use. YMMV.

If you can only afford one filter at the moment then I would suggest a high quality Vari-ND. Get a complete set of ND and ND Grads once you can afford a nice matte box.

"Good" variable NDs are about five times the price of a conventional filter of the same size, so if he could only afford one of the latter, I don't think he's in the market for a $400 Heliopan or whatever.

Yea a 77mm 3 stop B+W non-MRC screw in filter is under $100 whereas a Vari Singh-Ray starts at $400.
