Most Underrated/Overrated Actor(s)

I have been saying that for years. It's like he's been coasting for a long time. The dude is wooden.

Having said that...Blade Runner and Witness, no complaints there.

Agreed. And I like him in Raiders and the Star Wars stuff too. He can be very interesting to watch in tough guy/rogue roles, but can't play tender or deep nearly as well. As a person though, he seems quite likeable.

However, the guy who takes the overrated cake right now for my money would be Brad Pitt. He makes Harrison Ford look like Pacino on steroids. I think Pitt just might have the highest fame-to-ability ratio of any Hollywood star going right now.

Then there's the vastly overrated Colin Farrell...

While I'm not a big Brad Pitt fan I thought he was spot on in Kalifornia and I also like him in 12 Monkeys.

Well, just my opinion and all, but I've never seen any performance by him that I felt was really successful. The best I've seen of him would be Fight Club, which was not bad, and Babel, which was so-so. He's certainly handsome, and seems like an OK guy from what I can tell, but way overrated as an actor in my book.

My $.02

I can't believe some of the names cropping up here as "under rated"!

Some people seem to be getting mixed up between under rated and "not as famous" or "not so pretty/handsome".

Heres mine anyway...Alec Baldwin, thought he was superb in Heavens Prisoners (but i am a big James Lee Burke fan).

That whole film is underrated. I adore that film. I've seen it five or six times, and I can't get enough of it. I even got my mother hooked on that film like ten years back. The writing is great, and the acting is solid.

Baldwin has been mentioned on here more than once, and everybody knows he is good...very good.

Now Mandy Patinkin...there's an underrated actor. He and James Spader were really good in The Music Of Chance. The whole cast was actually pretty good. Joel Grey, Charles Durning, M. Emmet Walsh, Chris Penn, Samantha Mathis...nice little roster.

There is a big difference between a GOOD actor and a GOOD performance in a film. Some actors are successful because they take roles that their personalities fit and very little "acting" is required. Then there are those that transform themselves into the roles no matter how far from their actual personality.

Reminds me of a comment made by a British designer I worked with, a few years ago, regarding 'acting' vs. 'personality...'

The difference between Americans and Brits, is that Brits want to be actors, and Americans want to be Movie Stars.

Alec Baldwin is kind of hit and miss. If he's directed well, he'll bring out a good performance. For example, he was great in "The Departed", "The Cooler" (with William H Macy - a great actor!) and on 30 Rock. Then you have something like "The Edge" where he was just dreadful...

As time goes on I become more and more convinced that no actor, even a really, truly great actor, is likely to deliver a particularly worthwhile performance, without at least competent direction.

I can't out-act Alec Baldwin! He's the greatest actor of all time!
