I am using vegas right now. I am wanting to do some proper manual color correcting to my picture. Which program will offer the best tweaking options ?

I love Color Finesse, and it was free with the Production Bundle! Huzzah for free solutions!

Kai,

I think I remember reading you're on Mac? y/n.
Does anyone offer Power Windows telecine-style correction besides Final Touch?

I love color finesse. I also use Photoshop as well, sometimes it seems easier to think and color correct in photoshop than after effects.

When you say you cc in photoshop, are you talking about saving the video as a filmstrip? If so does that work efficiently on larger clips, say 20 minutes?

Holy crap mino, that's a long ass clip. Is it an entire short or one continuous shot?

Sometimes I have to tweak long continuos shots, corporate live eye stuff (taped for archive) usually one long hour shot that doesn't get edited. I usually break it down into 4 x 15 min segments. If anyone has a better idea, I'm way open.... So a fifteen min cc in photoshop looked like an option I might want to investigate. Most times I nail it and the shot just ships to DVD, but my last event was messed up when some clown turned on a whole ceiling full of mercury vapour lamps cos he felt the room was getting too dark!

Mac, through & through.

AE and Photoshop have similar cc tools, but I find that photoshop allows a little more experimentation, and I find it just runs faster. I'll usually play around in photoshop first and then move to AE to recreate what I did in photoshop.

I don't export filmstrips from AE for cc in photoshop. You could do that, but if you're dealing with 20 minute takes it'll just slow everything down in photoshop. I don't see it as an efficient alternative. Once you export a filmstrip more than a few seconds Photoshop really begins to choke.

You could export as frames, open one up in photoshop, figure out the cc you like, and then create a script to cc a folder of frames. This sounds slow but a lot of DI places will scan a film and then they're just dealing with frames in AE, so it's not that different.

Boy I'd like someone to give me a lesson on Color Finesse. Too many buttons. Blue Gain??? Good Lord!

The film stock presets are nice as is being able to go in and set your lums for Highs, Middles and Blacks!!

Plus... it looks cool!

the PPRO color corrector is pretty much like the AE corrector. the basically use alot of the same engine. i wouldnt dream of spending the time to go into photoshop. its just not necessary. color finesse is also available for PPRO as a plugin.

PPRO and AE both lack gradient maps. If AE had a built in gradient map feature I probably wouldn't even bother going into photoshop.

"power windows" are part of an elaborate CC system used in high end film-to-tape...
Final Touch has them.. I'm planning on ordering the "SD" version at some point. "HD" is too much.

Special On Color Finesse

Haven't heard too many people raving about this, but apologies if I missed it:

Adobe is having a special on AE 6.5, not pro, and yet you get color finesse for free - only $399 at the adobe online store. Frigging amazing deal if you ask me.
