most affordable XLR to PC solution?

Hi Mike,

Ironically, in addition to the Tapco portable mixers, I also own the Alexis 12 channel USB mixer. It's a very versatile unit for home use, whereas these Tapco's don't require a/c power, are definitely more rugged, but only have 2 inputs. If you're looking to grow with a flexible home application, go with something like the Alexis, but if you only want a basic 2 channel mixer that you might want to take out on the road, then the Tapco is a nice choice.

I agree with Phil - either the USB or firewire Alesis should essentially provide the same results (same Analog-Digital Converter, etc); one might say the Firewire throughput is faster but at audio speeds, the 400Mbps USB 2.0 is lightning fast for audio inputs/outputs.

Regarding possible cabling to your internal sound card, many audiophiles and almost all audio engineers would prefer not to use something like the typical SoundBlaster cards for serious audio work. But if you're only interested as a hobbyist, the adapter cable would be another possibility.

Regards, Michael
