More Storage for an Imac

Right now I have an Imac for editing, hopefully soon can upgrade to G5, but for now I'm running out of space on the Hard drive and using my Fantom external can get annoying during playback. Does anyone know what the best way to add more storage? Can I get an Internal for Imac?

Thanks

Re: More Storage for an Imac

Imac: G3?, G4?, processor speed? available RAM?

Software: FC Express?, FC Pro?... IMovie?

External Drive: Firewire? 7200 RPM? In what way is it 'annoying'?

The problem might not be your external drive.
Does all of your hardware meet the 'minimum system requirements' of your software?

Re: More Storage for an Imac

-The Imac is a G4 1.25, with 768ram.

-FCP 4

-7200rpm, firewire 120gb fantom harddrive.

The problem I have, is if I set the Harddrive as the scratch Disk to where the captured video is being saved, then during playback it has to go through the harddrive then to the computer and can get choppy or drop a frame, and then the warning comes up on FCP. Unless I'm doing something wrong here. Any help woould be greatlt appreciated.

Thanks

Re: More Storage for an Imac

I think this post belongs in the FCP Forum...

Couple more questions that come to mind:

Do you optimize your external and startup HD on occasion?

Where do you store the project file?

I've been told to keep the project file on your startup drive and your media on a seperate drive. That way the drive that is reading the project file is not having to, simultaneously, read the media.

Re: More Storage for an Imac

By optimize do you mean clean up or delete old files. If thats the case then yes I do.

But if I store the project file on the startup drive and the media on the external, won't the video be running from the external to the computer and through FCP. I tryed this and it can still get choppy. I guess i have to deal with until I can afford a G5.

Thanks for the info
