More Squeeze Mode Questions

I shot in squeeze mode all day today at f6.

What must I do in Vegas to create a Quicktime file (or any other file type for that matter) that will be displayed as a widescreen clip?

I set my project to NTSC 24p widescreen, which I believe is correct, but then I don't know what settings to choose for rendering out. I've selected a few wide settings like 512x218, but I get black bars on the right and left of the clip, while the player is displayed in 512x218.

I'm sure it's a few simple settings, but I'm hung up! ???

Re: More Squeeze Mode Questions

512X218 is way wide -- it's 2.35:1.  Squeeze mode is (approximately) 16:9, or 1.78:1.  You're getting the black bars on either side because your output format is much wider than the material.

In Quicktime, go to Custom/Video.  Choose NTSC DV, the framerate of 23.976024 and choose a pixel aspect ratio of 1.212. Keep the pixel count at 720x480.

OK, that made sense. I guess I have a new question.

I'm basically trying to get a wide look out of my material, similar to many of the video postings in the frame grabs section.

I thought squeeze mode would allow me to ultimately create a Quicktime file that had a wide display window with the video clip filling the window (no black bars). I guess it all comes back to the source material size.

Re: More Squeeze Mode Questions

OK, try this, when rendering out to QT -- crop your image so that the width is 720 and height is 367.  Then, in the rendering custom video box, set the width to 720 and the height to 306 (or something proportional.  Set the pixel aspect ratio 1.00.

Re: More Squeeze Mode Questions

Thanks for helping out. After a bunch of testing, here is what seems to work. Let me know if I am actually "stretching" and distorting the image.

I put the original squeeze mode 24p (f6) clip into Vegas NTSC 24p Widescreen timeline. I did not crop the image, but rendered a QT file at these settings:

Frame Size 320x180
Pixel Aspect ratio: 1.000

This displays the clip in the QT player at 320x180 without any black bars. It also seems to display properly, but it is small, so it could be stretching the images.

Re: More Squeeze Mode Questions

The easiest way to tell if things are being streched/squished is to film some regular geometric shapes...circles and squares... then see if they are still correctly proportioned in the final output.
