More RED DRAGON footage - skin tones

I honestly can't tell the difference between any of this footage anymore. Be it a GH2/3, BMC, Canon, Nikon, GoPro, whatever. It all looks the same to me these days. The only camera that looks drastically different to me is the Alexa. Sure I can see the dynamic range difference in the raw footage, but beyond that, the effect is the same.

Now the motion is different. Maybe that's why I like the Alexa, it moves like film. Granted the Red does too, but not as much.

What? There is no difference in the "movement" of an Alexa vs an Epic.

Now highlight rolloff I'll give you.

Very nice skin tones, and great, um... filmic motion at 2:20.

But uploading to Vimeo at 720??? RED? Why's that?

Pretty good.. if you are an FS100 shooter.

Honestly a lot of IMO slightly dodgy reds, some terrible highlights, too much saturation and.. generally.. im unimpressed.

But of course its a raw file so I'm sure it could be taken in a million other directions

Different people have of course different skin tones. Can you please post some footage of Scarlet Johansson for a reference? Probably the more skin the better, just for a comparison. Thanks.

A lot of the differences you can't see - i.e. what shots could you not get because of camera limitations? How many hoops did you have to jump through? Dragon removes hoops and limitations. As for "film-like" too many Scarlet owners (not all, some are great) don't know what they are doing, so they get sub-par results. This is only because the camera doesn't cost much, so it's easily accessible to beginners and no-budget productions. Any camera can look like crap. This horrible video was shot on Alexa by a horrific hack I have only contempt for - no problem saying it publicly (he told me he chose Alexa because it is "more film like"):

Wow - that's certainly lacking the Alexa 'mojo', LOL.

Just a very cringe worthy video... on so many levels.

Come on now. Constant refrains of "Alexa is better 'cause skin tones" and when Red addresses that the very first comment is a brand new, never-before-heard reason that Alexa is better. I mean, come on. How much are they paying you?

Well yeah, when someone uploads 720p to vimeo of course its all going to look the same. I'm hoping this video is 1080 but they just didn't select that option in the settings? needless to say, downloading uncompressed files is the only way to judge any sort of footage.

I get looking at the download if you're doing a technical dissection of the footage. You want to see it without compression. But is that really important if that's not how people are watching the final product?

I would say 99% of music videos, for example, are going to be seen on youtube or Vivo, even big budget productions for major stars. Robin Thicke has one of the hottest music videos out right now and everyone is watching it on Vevo.

Maybe we'll get less compression as fiber all the way to the home rolls out. I thought the Dragon footage looked good, even compressed.

One can shoot and grade a Red and an Alexa to look indistinguishable from each other within the limits of Alexa's resolution. Alexa just makes it easier to get pleasing skin tones and highlight rolloff.
