More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HELLp

O.K. then, I'm pretty sure I have my capture settings correct.

I shot all my footage as 24P Advanced with the Squeeze mode turned ON.

I set my capture settings to the following: This is the summary from the Audio Video Settings / Capture presets tab

Using DV Video for video input
AG-DVX100A using NTSC
23.98 frames per second
DV/DVCPRO - NTSC at Best quality
24 bits per pixel
720 by 480 (Anamorphic 16:9)
Using DV Audio for audio input
Input: First 2 channels
Rate: 48.000 kHz
Speaker: on
Volume: 100, Gain: 0

Seems to work GREAT. When I double click a clip to view it, it plays back perfectly. NOW here is my problem. Once I add the clip to the timeline it goes to hell. So, I'm assuming that my "sequnce" settings are the problem. I am getting "interlacing lines" for lack of a better term, very sketchy looking.

Here are the "Sequence Preset" settings that I am using

Frame Size: 720 x 480 pixels
Editing Timebase: 23.98fps
Field Dominance: None
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV
Anamorphic 16:9: On
Video Processing: YUV allowed (8-bit)
White Point: White

Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Millions of Colors (24 bit)
No Data Rate Limit
No Keyframes Set
Quality: 100

Audio Settings
16-bit 48.000 kHz Stereo

ANY HELP OUT THERE? This is my first 24p project so please bear with me.

When shooting 24pA, you should be using the capture preset of

DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal

You don't have to render anything this way.

Your sequence setting should be for DV NTSC 48kHz - 23.98

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

Well like I said, I'm shooting in Squeeze mode, so I had to duplicate that preset and change the anamorphic to ON. Other than that, captured footage plays back perfectly. It's once I get it into the timeline that I'm getting these strange lines/distortion (whatever it really is I don't know the correct term)

It only does it when playing from the timeline.

Ahhh, the learning curve.... I'm having fun I swear. $6G's of NEW gear and I can't output anything.... it kinda hurts in a way.

Anyone?

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

As far as I can understand what you are saying, you haven't removed the pulldown. You should be capturing at 29.97 with the remove advanced pulldown box checked, then editing at 23.98 sequence.

But, I've captured 23.98 and edited 23.98 and had no problems, other than when I made an anamorphic clip into a 4x3(black bars on top/bottom), I got interlacing lines.

How fast is your computer? Understand that without removing pulldown it can create a lag using ntsc if your system isn't fast enough.

Capturing at 29.97 with pulldown removed is the safest bet to fixing your problem.

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

Well there you go, that's exactly what's happening with the "interlacing lines" on the 4x3. So that explains that. Computer is plenty fast, drives are really good as well.

I will re capture at 29.97

thanks for the help

What are the device control settings? 29.97 over firewire, or 23.98?

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

I almost always use 24pa to capture most of what I film.  In order to edit with 24pa you NEED to import using the

DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal       Preset
(do not worry about the framerate of this pulldown removal, it doesn't matter, it is a preset, just use it)

If you do not, your footage will be interlaced to hell.  Then after you digitize all of your footage using this preset you need your sequence settings to reflect the Pulldown removal by editing in a 23.98 fps timeline.

24pa is really meant to be used if you want to edit as you would a 16mm or 35mm film and to output back to those formats.  This is the ONLY way to rid your problems with the interlaced lines.  YOU CANNOT DO THIS ANY OTHER WAY, WITHOUT PROBLEMS!

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

Hopefully that clears 24pa up for everyone ;D

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

so what about the anamorphic settings. I can capture with the preset just fine, and yes the interlacing lines are gone... but now it's still squeezed.

?

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

In your sequence setting is your anamorphic checkbox checked?

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

Re: More Capture settings vs. Sequence Settings HE

Ahh what you can do is under FCP's Audio/Video Settings>Capture Presets Tab you can duplicate the DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal Preset and then Edit the duplicate and check the Anamorphic 16:9 checkbox. OK that.
You can now import your footage the same way you would before and then in your sequence setting make sure like I said before that it is 23.98 and that the anamorphic checkbox is checked. It may already be checked because FCP may know that you are importing anamorphic footage if you digitized using the copied preset with the already check anamorphic checkbox...Make sense :P
