The Palme d'Or of this 57th edition of the Festival de Cannes was presented by Charlize Theron to Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore.

"I can't begin to express my appreciation and my gratitude to the jury, the Festival, to Gilles Jacob, Thierry Frémaux, Bob and Harvey at Miramax, to all of the crew who worked on the film. [...] I have a sneaking suspicion that what you have done here and the response from everyone at the festival, you will assure that the American people will see this film. I can't thank you enough for that. You've put a huge light on this and many people want the truth and many want to put it in the closet, just walk away. There was a great Republican president who once said, if you just give the people the truth, the republicans, the Americans will be saved. [...] I dedicate this Palme d'Or to my daughter, to the children of Americans and to Iraq and to all those in the world who suffer from our actions. "

<end quote>

The jury was chaired by Quentin Tarantino and its 9-member panel included Jerry Schatzberg, Kathleen Turner and Tilda Swinton.

The standing ovation for Moore was shorter this time... only 9 minutes.

I watched that, one of the only times the leaf was given to a documentary. I'll reserve my judgement until I've seen the film.

I usually enjoy Moore's documentaries, even if I disagree with the political diatribe.

Michael Moore, regardless to his attraction to political controversies, is a superb filmmaker. since "Roger and Me", including that one, he managed to create some strong documentary pieces that succeed the not so easy cross over to cinema halls. his selection to the 1st prize of cannes surely puts the documentary filmmaking back on the map.. and at leat for that, i'm very happy. here: :D

That's true. Whether or not you *like* him or his films, you gotta respect the fact that he makes documentaries that people enjoy watching...I know many a people who before seeing "Bowling for Columbine" would have said they hated all documentarys...

But there's so much fiction in everything he does (Disney distribution deal, fabricated interviews with people (see Fred Barnes)), it's hard to take any "documentary" of his seriously. "Mockumentary" may be more appropriate?

Re: Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" wins at Ca

There was extensive furor after he won the Oscar for "Bowling for Columbine" and people went and documented what they said were his "errors" (or "lies," depending on which side of the fence you prefer to sit on).  It calls into question whether what he does should be called "documentaries".  People wanted to recall his Oscar, because they contend that his picture was more a work of fiction than a documentary.

Since then I prefer to think of Moore's pictures as "entertainment pieces" rather than "documentaries".  Many people seem to find them entertaining, if not factual.

I sit on the side of finding them (bowling) entertaining. I don't side, agree, nor like his views, but I do like well done films, such as he makes.

(in case anyone cared what I thought haha) :P

His documenteries are pretty much like the news, only showing you the most extreme side. Barry, I remember the recall oscar rumors going around the only problem was it was his words against theirs (theirs being mostly gun users and defenders).

Re: Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" wins at Ca

if i'm not wrong, Moore's "Roger and me" was also nominated for oscar and was rejected because someone proved that one of the scenes was set-up or not authentically "documented".. which brings us to the very interesting and never solved question: "define a Documentary Film"...
anyone that got seriously into this genre knows that there's a thin line between "set-up" and "authentic". documentaries telling stories as much as fiction films do. they serve a point of view, a statement, a philosophical idea like fiction films do. they manipulate, using all common tools (camera, light, music, editing) just like fictions do and yet, as an audience, you might feel cheated if a film who claimed to be "documentary" is actually "not". it's like breaking this never-written contract between the filmmaker and the viewer.
my opinion.. documentary should be treated like any other genre. (i.e horror, comedy etc.) it's a style of making and should be differed from the journalistic ethical rules once and for all. rejecting a documentary film due to doubts of its "authentic" is naive. thinking documentary is "true" while fiction is "made up" is naive. it's all fiction... damn, what i see when i look out the window is fiction.

I think the "General Public" views documentaries to be true stories. An example would be the WWII documentaries. When you cover a topic, specifically something that could be very controversial, making sure your facts are correct should be a top priority. Otherwise it would fall into the "Based on a True Story" category.

Even reporting in the news sometimes can fall in that category an example would be the "Gay Gene", which proven to not exist. The media latched on to it, people believed it and still do. When asked about it, the scientist that claimed it existed, said we knew it wasn't true, but enough people believed it. In the end, some people now will be slower to accept the gay community that heard this was not true. It even diminishes the medias reputation and creates more skeptisism (did I spell right....Break it down like W.)

There should be clear guidelines on what is excepted as a Documentary. Is it to be as accurate as possible or should they be allowed to have the freedom to do what they want and still qualify for the awards. He is an exceptional filmmaker, no doubt, but where does that put those in that category that maintained accuracy.

Just an opinion.

I think in the U.S. people expect (no demand) that docs be factual in nature, to distinguish them from the total fabrication that is now the news in this country...

Re: Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" wins at Ca

Read about some of the stuff that he supposedly pulled during "Bowling for Columbine" and you may come to some interesting conclusions.  There are some sites out there that make some quite disturbing allegations, and they include www.hardylaw.net/Truth_About_Bowling.html and www.BowlingForTruth.com.  I'm not sure about the credibility of either site, so reader beware.

I don't have an informed opinion on this subject, I haven't seen the picture, and I don't know if the allegations on these sites are true... but these sites certainly make for interesting reading and, if true, they do make the case that perhaps the Oscar for "Best Documentary" was perhaps not warranted in the "documentary" category.
