Has anyone used a monopod before? i was considering pickin one up. they look real simple to use and lightweight. Anyone hear of any problems or anything??? I was looking at a $98 bogen one on B&H.com

I know people that use them and they like them. Light for on the go shooting. I have thought about getting one but I keep spending money other things.

Make sure to get a flex-head too. It's a small rubber piece that goes inbetween the monopod and the camera. It's a MUST BUY!

I have a Bogen monopod that I rigged a couple one pound weights to the bottom and I use it as a steadicam. It does the trick.

The bogen/manfrotto monopod for $48 is pretty damn good. I've still got mine and you should just put about a pound on the bottom for steadycam. You can get 1/2 pound weights from any fitness store. Get the ones with the smallest center hole and it won't take much work to fix them on the bottom of that bogen pod.

It's funny when I first started doing this I sent a letter to Computer Video (videography?) magazine a few years ago and they published it in their "tips" section. It was a really arrogant letter claiming 90% of the effectiveness of steadicam for 5% of the cost (or something to that effect)... I was shocked when I opened an issue and thought "who is this intelligent sounding jerk?" then saw my name at the bottom... D'oh!

Okay so if you want to spend a serious chunk then you can get the Gitzo CF monopod for around $220 at B&H... I also have that one and it's great for quasi-crane shots. The thing can go to 7' all by itself and if you hold your monopod at your chest you can do a crane shot. You can even do it with the cheap bogen. Trust me, you'll be doing high-to-low stuff all the time after you first try it.
