monopd vs. shoulder mount for DSLR

I know that they're both used for stabilization, but which is ideal for which situations?

Well if you plan on walking around them by all means you have to go with a shoulder mount.
Nevertheless you can walk around with a monopod and it will stabilize the motion for you quite a bit (it's of course far from ideal). However every time you stop and you put it down on the ground to rest.... your picture will shake.

MetXlnt is correct except he left out one thing, once you do land a monopod, it is more steady than a shoulder rig IMHO.

Perhaps if you use some kind of padding on the bottom of the monopod, so when you do land it,... it would help you to land softly.
