Mono to stereo

I have a stereo track that I have seperate into two seperate tracks. making them mono as stereo. I sync the audio with the video then i merge to make them a new clip. When I do this it makes my stereo audio into four mono tracks. Is there a way to remedy this? If I did not give enough info or i was unclear I can try to explain better. Let me know if anyone can help.
