SMuir, do you mean the gain control? When I record to 2 tracks, I always hard mix L for boom and sum all the wireless R.

Sorry, I should have clarified. When I'm recording with a boom only, I pan the single channel off-center to get that lower-level backup. With boom and wireless, I follow the same procedure you've outlined: boom hard left, all wireless mixed to hard right.
