Ran a search and found this topic addressed in parts, but never really a straight answer. I'm an acoustical engineering student, like doing all of my own sound work for my short films hopefully doing sound design on features down the road if straight up directing doesn't pan out (good odds for both jobs isn't?
)
Anyway, I own decent headphones which are great for editing, however now I'm really starting to get into films that I want to show beyond just my school's crappy theater (they managed to play a dvd of my film and dropped the dialog track, what's odd was that it was only mixed into 2.0 with dialog on both tracks, kinda impressive actually) and I'm trying to get a decent monitor setup. Currently I've got a $6000-ish 7.1 home theater surround sound setup, but all the speakers are targeted for movie/music listening. Kinda a hobby that became a career path, so everything well calibrated and room's acoustically treated. Good stuff, however I'm curious if anyone has opinions about how mid-range home theater gear would work for mixing sound on films.
Or are speakers designed to be monitors really needed?
Also, I know this is a video based site and I'm not really aware of forums targeted at sound mixing. Any suggestions there would be good as well.
Thanks,
