monitors: lines of resolution

What would be the reasons for choosing a monitor with more lines of resolution? For example, the Sony 9L2 is about $700, but go from 250 to 450 lines and you have the 9L3 at $1100. Nice but unimportant?

Re: monitors: lines of resolution

How clearly (sharp) do you want to see?

The numbers [450 vs 250] give you the answer. ;)

Re: monitors: lines of resolution

Pookie, you tell me how clearly! I mean, is the idea to see the best possible picture, or to emulate (and anticipate the images on) the typical, mediocre TV that most of our fellow citizens own? ???

Re: monitors: lines of resolution

Powerdog, you always want to try for the best image quality you can output, regardless of the fact that a majority of your viewers will be using inferior consumer-grade monitors.

Output the minimum grade of signal, and the better-quality the display your work is shown on, the crummier it will look.

Re: monitors: lines of resolution

Yeah, I can see that. Besides, if I show my work to prospects on a great monitor, they'll think I do great looking work. If it's not so good on their TVs, I'll tell them they need a better TV.

I think it goes without saying that it's all relative, man. You can produce beautiful, amazing work using a ten inch black and white tv. But ultimately the higher the lines of resolution, the sharper the detail and usually the better color reproduction you will have available. This can be really important when you are incorporating graphics into your workflow, because sometimes they are out of ntsc color safe range, or are using thin lines that vibrate on a better monitor but won't on a lower rez monitor since they tend to "fuzz" things out a bit. Anyone watching your work on a tv better than you used to finish your project on will see all the flaws you couldn't.

That said, I use a consumer grade TV because I can't afford to spend $1000 on a pro monitor. But in the process, I chose one that I am pretty confident is reproducing things well and I always check my work on several other tvs before calling it done.

Re: monitors: lines of resolution

Interesting email from Rush. He thought some Sonys were on backorder, but wrote again to say that the order was cancelled because Sony is getting out of the CRT biz. Panny is already out, and JVC is the only one left. If Sony is the standard for broadcast, this is going to come as bad news, I guess.

Re: monitors: lines of resolution

DV shows 482 or 480 lines of resolution out of 525 lines, the other remaining lines are dedicated to containing control info.
Panasonics HD Varicam has 720 lines.

If you want to montior your image at it's peak resolution you need a monitor that equals or surpasses the camera resolution.

you need good monitor to train your eye to see in a professional manner.

Re: monitors: lines of resolution

And, just to toss this in, a lot of editors apparently dislike Trinitrons because of the mask used on the screen, which they say "sharpens" the image artificially.
