Confronted with a multipart "computer overheating" problem and the possible consideration to expand to more powerful computer, I am looking to get comments from professionals who are "there" with more experience with AVCHD than I.
Looking for some comments from folks using either a MacBook Pro Retina (new generation) and with a second screen especially using HDMI) . . or . . a MacPro (new version design) that are using either two screens via either Thunderbolt to HDMI or Thunderbolt to mini display port adaptor to DVI. . . AND . . decided to use a 1920 x 1080 HD TV instead of an official monitor since the specs on both devices now appear to be identical?
BACKGROUND
- OLD BUSINESS MODEL In the short distant past I used a MacPro or MacBook Pro with FCP7 editing 1 to 6 cameras of DV or HDV (over 100 vids a year)
- NEW BUSINESS MODEL About two years ago I switched production model to 100% to AVCHD, went to one camera freelancing, then converted it to, .MOV or a FCP intermediate derivative using Wondershare Video Converter and edited. No Problems. However, all these clips and videos were less than a few minutes in length (commercials or musics) The equipment in this new config: MacBook Pro 15" Retina (new generation this year) with 2.7 GHz i7 with 512 Gb SSD with an external 25" HP 25bw monitor and external mounted Thunderbolt Seagate SATA Dock. Again, no problems really other than occasionally some overheating and related mini visual lags on the screens. (~50-100 vids a year)
- FUTURE BUSINESS MODEL more of the same except . . now 1 to 6 cams of AVCHD from Video Cams, DSLR's, GoPro Hero4 Silver, etc. using the same config as in the NEW BUSINESS MODEL above and with longer videos and/or multi cam YIKES are the problems mounting. Computer gets hot enough that for sure it will melt down in the next months ahead. Lock ups, failures, and even this message comes on the screen, locks up, and I have to press the shut off button and hold to restart because it is just too much: "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory." etc. There is more but the fact is there is plenty of maxed our memory (16gb all it will hold) AND there is over 150 Gb's of free SSD space (over flow mem goes to SSD I'm told) and thus I must have a better model to avoid total crash at some point here.
- THOUGHTS? Should I consider going back to a MacPro again, only the new model with 12Gb ram, 256Gb SSD, etc. (base model) with external monitors and external RAID 0 WD VelosiRaptor DUO 10,000 rpm drive arrangements? The latter I have already done at the recommendation of B&H. They suggested I hit the community about other thoughts before stepping ahead with the expansion even though they would gladly take my money
Thus, with the above, I am asking myself with an upgrade consideration, why not just buy TV's instead of computer monitors? Perhaps I'd actually help myself in many ways. One for sure is that anytime I had to make many color corrections on footage someone has sent me most always required additional correction when I viewed it on a TV. Thus, why not just use a TV as the monitor and then perhaps the finished product output would actually be finished since it had already been seen and edited on the final output device.
