I’m just getting my head around the concept of monitoring, and I think it’s something a lot of people have trouble understanding. Let’s talk about it!
So monitoring is simply how you view your footage?
Whilst we are all editing on computer screens, it’s been suggested many times that it would be better to hook up a TV or an external monitor to get a better idea of what our footage actually looks like.
So why is a computer screen not a good way of monitoring? – I would guess this is to do with resolution, but can anyone go into more detail. And if what’s on a computer screen is not a good representation of what we’ve actually filmed, in what way does a computer screen let us down?
Also, (and I think this is a monitoring issue) A DVX shoots at a resolution of 72dpi at a resolution of 720 x 575 – is that true? If you want footage at a higher resolution then that, you have to essentially look at post-production filters/processes etc that attempt to up the quality and stretch the image?
Any other monitoring facts/stats that may be of interest to us all? How do you monitor?
Cheers everyone,
