monitoring using xm2 ?

am I being stupid (is usually the case) or is it not possible to

connect from vegas 6 via firewire in to my canon xm2 and then monitor to tv via A/V out

Not sure specifically on the XM2, but I have an ancient Sony digital8 that sits there converting firewire to AV with no problems.

You have to push the monitor button in Vegas and set up you camera to pass through the firewire input.
