Monitoring in FCP

Sorry for the dumb questions - but I am new to FCP. Formally I had a Matrox
RT system on Windows and was able to use a broadcast monitor while editing.
Currently with FCP I am having to export to a QT file to view on my HD monitor, which is hooked up to the DVI output on my Imac.
Should I be able to view material on this monitor while in the editing process?
If so, what am I doing wrong?

When you say export to a QT file to view on your HD monitor, how are you viewing the QT file? What software are you running it in? Do you have another monitor hooked up to your system?

I'm just exporting the timeline to QT using "Export QT movie" and opening in QT to view. I just have the Imac desktop and this monitor. The monitor mirrors the desktop.
Maybe this is my problem, but I'm not sure how to send output from FCP out to the monitor otherwise. If this were my old Matrox system, the monitor would be hooked up to the breakout box - but I'm not sure how this works on an Imac. I guess i should be
using Digital Cinema Desktop settings to do this - but have not have success trying it.

If you're using FCP 5 gp tp View>Video Playback and choose Digital Cinema Desktop Display-Preview. And you should be able to view your project full screen (well 720X480 if your using DV) on your second display as you edit.
