Monitoring FCP on a MBP or Imac ... 24p

I've used a sony HR monitor for DV projects with Sony DV deck for video feed - with G5 tower

Now that I'll be shooting HD with canon 5Dll and getting an IMac or MBP I'm confused how I'll get a full screen preview to check on editing progress.
I have a 23" cinema monitor and would love to use that but have no idea what my options are for 24p monitoring (on the cheap) ... I believe the mini dvi out feed is only for mirrored or extended monitoring on MBP or IMac ...

What are budget minded users doing with the IMac or MBP, that actually is working?

With the G5 & agp cinema monitor, I can select the cinema display mode in FCP6 and get a full screen preview.... even with 5Dll HD edits ..... does this work with the IMac ? or MBP?

I don't need a realtime full screen monitoring capability, as simply checking periodically is sufficient right now.

Guess I can ask at the Apple store as well .... but I'd prefer input from someone who's actually editing 24p footage.

Set FCP to "Digital Cinema Desktop - Full" - there will be two, use the second one.
Enable Video Output.
You'll have your secondary display showing full raster out of FCP even on a MacBook Pro.

Also check you System Preferences -> Displays to disable display mirroring in the OS, and check their arrangement so the mouse can go from display A to display B properly and the Apple Top Bar is where you want it to be.

Key is to start FCP with both displays on, configured and un-mirrored.

This type of Video Output in FCP is tested on Mac Book Pro - Every model apple made. (via DVI or MINI DVI/Displayport) - I've not tested this on iMac.
