Monitoring Audio out of Final Cut Pro

Hi,

How do you have your monitors hooked up to your computer?

I have tried using an mbox and get intermittent 0db white noise.
I tried using a Presonus firebox and get intermittent pops and clicks.
I tried using the stock 1/8" mini port but it is too noisy.

I am using DVCPro HD from p2 so I don't have a AJ1200 deck and I don't shoot SD, so I can't use firewire audio like the old days.

Thanks..

How do you monitor your video? It's best if the audio is coming out from the same source as the video. For instance, if you monitor your video directly from the video card of your computer, it's better to output the audio directly from the computer (to avoid latency and de-synchronization of audio and video), and I think (if you don't have optical audio ports) that the best way is from RCA ports. I would try a PCI audio card like m-audio Delta 66 or something like that. I've never used it, but I know m-audio make good products that are not too expensive.

For my part, I monitor on a NTSC broadcast monitor connected to a camcorder, so I output the audio from the RCA ports of my cam. This way, I am sure that the audio and video are always synchro.

Hope this helped!

My monitoring signal chain is currently:
mBox --> Behringer Eurorack MX1604A --> Yorkville YSM1P

The Yorkvilles I use are self-powered monitors. My only real complaint about the setup is that, like many Behringer products, the MX1604A mixer is not very well designed or built. However, for monitoring purposes, it works fine.

Mind you, I'm generally monitoring ProTools' output. On those occasions when I'm cutting video, I'll monitor the RCA audio line out from my DV transcorder (also my video monitoring source, as Guillaume pointed out).

The problems you describe with the mbox output sound like you may have a bad connection or piece of gear along the way. Try plugging that mBox into the inputs on a mixer or other device that has a headphone output, and see if you still get that noise issue when you're not using your speakers and amp.

We also may be able to offer more insight if you let us know what model of monitors (and amplifier, if applicable) you're using.

I monior video on a 17" HDTV with DVI input by selecting it in the external video options. I have not had a problem with latency (that I noticed).

I have all new connections with my mbox (balanced all the way). It is a software issue.

I have an Mbox 2, and have never had white noise problems. Occassionally when I'm using the core audio drivers (ie. listening to anything but Pro Tools), the sound cuts out altogether, but if I go into System Prefs and select the Mbox 2 panel, it forces it to resync with the interface and audio is restored.

I suppose I will try upgrading my ptle to 7.3 ($75)

I am currently using the stand alone core audio driver 7.3 and it is having problems.
