Monitor with component input also used for editing? Recent monitor tests?

Which monitor do you recommend (PAL land):

Portable but big enough as control monitor for HD editing?
Not too expensive.

I guess 24 inch would be right.

Is there a link to recent testings?

Off line or on-line/color correction quality?

If you need just for off-line and your shows are on-lined in a real edit bay, buy any old consumer HD monitor, depnding on what format (HDMI, component analog) you are outputting for monitoring.

If you are finishing, on-lining, delivering for broadcast, you are looking at at least U.S. $5,000.00 to $7,000.00 for a so-so one or about U.S. $25,000.00 - $30,000.00 for one as good and as accurate as a broadcast CRT. Brands would be Sony, JVC for the cheap ones and Sony, E-Cinema and Cinetal for the good ones.

Don't forget, you also need a good at least industrial or broadcast CRT also, since that's what about 60% of your audience is still looking at. Most of us have both.

When I deliver broadcast shows, I rent the best monitor that money can buy. When I am doing my own projects, I just use a cheapo Sony consumer one, a 17" one that I bought on closeout a few years ago. Looks good although color and contrast are nowhere near accurate on it. Most of my projects deliver on the web or sometimes NTSC DVD so the cheapo one is fine for that.

Creativecow.net had a good article in their magazine a few months back on HD monitoring. I think he mentioned that the lowest priced monitor that was worth using for this was a dell 2407.

I have a Dell 2405, the older version of thw 2407 and its a terrible video monitor. Great computer monitor but unwatchable as a video monitor. Not sure if they made major improvements in the 2407's video circuitry.

The cheapest semi-accurate method I have heard of is pairing the Matrox MXO specifically with the 23" Apple Cinema display. According to Shane Ross, an LA editor who posts a lot over at the Cow, it is "kind of" close to accurate but it's still not as accurate as a real video monitor and you could get the pair for well uner U.S. $2,000.00

Best,

Dan
