Monitor while recording question.

I'm using an Alesis Multimix 8 to record some different things. Right now I will use Garage Band but hopefully I will soon delve into Logic. What is the best way to listen to what I am recording? Would it be better for me to using the headphone jack in my computer and have the monitor on or to use the one from the mixer? In a situation where I may be recording someone else, should I be listening to the mixer while they are hooked up to the computer monitor or does it not matter?

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Anybody that you are recording should listen through the mixer so they don't have any delay in the headphones. If they need to hear what Garage Band is playing, bring the Line Out of the computer back into the mixer via the Line In on the mixer.

You should probably listen through the computer (or whatever garage band is playing out through) so you can hear exactly what is being recorded.

Turn off your monitors if the mic you're recording with is in the same room, unles you want feedback or a really cool delay effect.

Aschu,

Are you using the FW or USB version of the Multimix? I have the FW 16 version that I use with Boom Recorder to do iso recording for film and I monitor everything through the headphone jack on the mixer. You can pre-fade/post-fade solo each track so you can clearly hear each to make any level or mic adjustments. I don't know about the software you're using, but with Boom Recorder it returns audio back to the mixer for monitoring without using the line out on the Mac. You can use the control room out or one of the other "outs" to feed headphones for the person you're recording. I use control room out to feed my Comteks.

I am using the USB version.

I would like to use firewire but it didn't fit my budget.

While I haven't used the USB version, I would think it would work in a similar fashion. Try emulating what I do with the FW version and see if it works.
