Monitor to get for the HVX?

Our HVX-200 is arriving Monday and I am wondering what monitor to use for it. Most of our use will be in the studio. There will also be some location work as well. I imagine we will want a medium size (19" or so) monitor for review. I want our clients to be able to see the image in high def when we're shooting to that spec.

Am I looking for a video monitor or a computer monitor?
Can anyone make a recomendation?

Thanks!

the dell 2405 24" monitor looks pretty good pared with the HVX - but a projector can be really nice as well - LCD tv's in the 26" range are also good. Do you need 720p native or 1080?

You definitely don't want to go getting a computer monitor. You want a proper professional HD monitor. LCDs are the current most-popular field monitors, both Sony and Panasonic have introduced LCD professional monitor lineups recently. I've used the Panasonic 17 quite a bit and really like it; it has a built-in waveform monitor and a frame store feature that is just priceless when working with the P2 system. Sony's monitors look pretty good too, but they're a two-piece system (a base and a monitor) that makes it less field-friendly.

I've got a couple of the Dell 2405's that I use in a dual screen configuration for editing, but the color and contrast go straight to hell as soon as you start moving off access. This would keep them from being suitable for a studio environment.

I don't know the answer to the 720p native or 1080 question. Could you explain the difference as it refers to the monitors?

Thanks!

Might there be anything that you could recommend in the $1,500 or so price category?

Thanks!

In the $1500 range? No. Not really.

In the $2700 range, the Panasonic 17" LCD is a great monitor, just got a killer review in Studio Monthly magazine too. We use it all the time.

Barry- a few questions for ya…

Does this monitor adhere to the rec. 709 spec? Is it suitable for postproduction color correction in conjunction with say Color Finesse and a Decklink card? Do you use it for any color correction tasks or merely as a production monitor? What do you use as a color correction monitor if not this?

Thanks for the info as usual,

for those of us that arent in 2 to 3k range for a production monitor, i came across a 19" widescreen samsung 940mw which is a computer monitor with a tuner, 1440x900, component, dvi, vga, s-video and rca inputs.
i put it next my friends dell 2405, we put up a grey card and macbeth chart and it look very similar.
i know this isnt a proper monitor but for $449 plus tax its not a bad solution for now and its easier to work as a production monitor than the dell 2405.

Well, I've found the whole monitor situation to be quite confusing and very frustrating as its been very difficult to get straight answers on the subject and everyone has a different opinion.

In the end I decided to order the Dell 2405 which should be here tomorrow- with an understanding that I may end up dropping some more cash into a broadcast LCD sometime later. I plan to primarily use this as a studio monitor and I will be doing color correction on it. I also plan to compare my results using this monitor on other higher quality monitors for reference. I will post my experiences and results when I have them for those who might be interested.
