Monitor stand?

I wasn't sure where to put this....

In the past, I have seen stands for field monitors (SD not HD) that fit on top of a baby stand or a C-Stand.

Does anyone know who makes these and where I might be able to locate one?

Usually we just take a nail on baby plate, pancake, and buttplug and stick that into a lo rise junior stand with wheels. Then we screw the monitor on and yeah...works good. Depending on how big and what kind of monitor you're using, you can just attach it to a c-stand.

Uhhhh,

I'm kinda new at this game. Can you give me some hints here without all the jargon? I know what a junior stand is (have one), and I know what a baby plate is... But you lost me with the rest.

I think he is saying that he is using a baby plate fastened to a pancake (1/8th applebox) which is then stuck in a hollywood stand....

...just have a god damned PA carry it around. Jeez! :)

Hollywood stand? I haven't heard that before, you mean C-stand? Or is it something different?

We may have just used a rolling junior stand because that was all we had in the truck, but I like it much more because of its wide base and therefore its stability.

Basically, putting a 17" LCD on a c-stand would just make me sorta nervous.

I have a 14" CRT broadcast monitor that I typically use for editing work, but I have a fairly important shoot coming up in December and I want to take it with me to make sure my lighting is on the money. But I want a decent solution here since I'll be in front of clients, and in a high dollar setting. This is the kind of shoot where you wrap the cables and present yourself well. Budget meeting is tomorrow morning, and I wanted to have an idea on the stand.

Thanks guys.

Are you moving around much? I would probably just put it on a table where they can all sit around. A bit easier than a stand.

I'm not moving at all. But I'd like to set up a monitor near my camera location where I can check focus and lighting. This is why I wanted it to be stand mounted.

Essentially, what I have seen is field monitors with a yoke attached, and at the bottom of the yoke is TVMP adapter or whatever to mount that yoke onto a c-stand or similar. I have also seen some mounts which had the monitor attached by straps to a plate, and the bottom of the plate had a fitting to go onto a stand.

Either of these would work great. I guess worst case, I can try to have something fabricated.

You need to get a VESA mount adapter. Check to see if your monitor uses 75mm or 100mm VESA spacing. Then you buy a mount, like one from B&H. Mount your monitor on the VESA bracket. Then mount the bracket to your light stand. Mine uses a Baby Pin. Works like a charm. I'm using it on a Manfrotto Crank-o-vator as a teleprompting solution with my Apple Cinema Display.

It's about a $100-200 investment plus the stand.

You'll also have to go to a local hardware store and buy the appropriate screws and bolts of course!

I (and others) call those rolling lightstands, 'hollywood' stands. Not sure where it started from.

Since the CRTs come out of fashion, monitor brackets are a bit hard to find.
I would say you need something like this:

or even that:

and bolt it to some solid stand.

Maybe you look into TV ceiling mount brackets. Turne them upside down and add feet or caster rolls.

didn't see that, sorry, what you need is a junior stand, and a larch baby plate with a small table top mounted to it, I think they also make table tops mounted to baby adapters.

You may also want to look at rolling carts. I use a modified cart I got from the housekeeping department of a hotel I used to work at, but there are dozens of options available. It's not a good solution for moving camera (dolly/handheld) work, but for tripod shots I park the cart a few feet from the camera and use it for my director's monitor, sound mixer, and laptop. It's kind of like a cross between an audio cart and a portable video village.

While my DP operates the camera, I can monitor the sound and image from the cart. I use the laptop for keeping shot logs and notes for post. It provides me a good solution for safely running cables to the camera (audio and monitor feed) as well as providing a stable place for the boom op to plug in to. I get an organized area to work in and have fewer worries about people accidentally tripping over cables or ripping them out of the camera.

In your case, I'd imagine the cart solution would ultimately be cheaper and more stable than stand mounting a CRT.

Great idea, thanks guys. Just got out of the production meeting and budget is tighter than I thought (as if I couldn't have guessed), so the cart may be the solution.
