I just got a new XPS from Dell. It has the x800 video card from Radeon with s-video out. Does anyone have any suggestions on running vegas where I can make the preview window work on the s-video output?
The preview will not go out the S-video output. Vegas previews through firewire only.
Some will tell you that you can set up your video card to run a dual-monitor system out your S-video output and then you can put your preview pain on the TV screen. This is not desirable. You will not get a true representation of what your video will look like on a TV screen that way.
Most NLEs preview through firewire, though that’s not entirely universal.
The point of previewing on a TV or professional NTSC monitor is that you will see what your video looks like on a TV. A TV has different dynamics from a computer monitor. A TV can’t display anywhere near the resolution or the number of colors. What looks fine on a computer monitor might look terrible on a TV screen – and vice-versa.
So would you recommend using an ADVC100 with S-video out to a NTSC or TV or to accurately judge the footage it must go with Firewire out -> Camera -> S-video out ->Monitor?

I have a ati radeon 9600xt card and i am able to run vegas through s-video straight to my TV. But i do agree with david that the image is not up to par.

You may be able to run Vegas through it, but I highly doubt you’re running the preview only through it, as Vegas isn’t set up that way. That goes out through firewire.

Sorry – didn’t see this until just now.
Again, the preview out from Vegas runs through firewire only. As I said above, some cards will let you use a TV or NTSC studio monitor as one of your computer monitors, but considering the vast resolution and colorspace difference between what you see on a computer screen and what you see on a TV, this approach is not recommended.
