Monitor setting in FCP?

I have been editing DV (720 by 480) shot on a DVX100B in FCP 6.04 previewing to a JVC TMH150C monitor. I recently got a Panasonic HMC150 and I am trying to edit 720p footage. It shows on the monitor but only still frames. It previews ok in Viewer and Digital Cinema Desktop. On the JVC monitor I cannot get it to play real time. What ever frame I stop on is what shows on it ...but no continous playback. Do I need an HD monitor? 1080p and 720p material previews ok on this monitor using Vegas 8.0c. Is there a setting in FCP I can change?

If I remember correctly, you can only monitor SD and HDV through FireWire from FCP. The HMC150 is an AVCHD camera. For playback, you'll need a capture card from AJA or BlackMagic Designs.

Cools is right. Via FW you can only monitor DV (if you have an HDV timeline it will be down-coverted into DV on the fly for monitoring if your computer is fast enough). Since you are working w/HD though you'd want to be using an HD monitor so it at full res and in the proper color space. The best budget solution is the Matrox MXO and a 23" Apple Cinema Display as this will get you quality very close to a Sony HD CRT b'cast monitor for around $1800. If that is too much money and color accuracy isn't a big deal you could grab a HDTV and a The Blackmagic Intensity Pro.

Will Blackmagic Intensity Pro let me monitor my HD timeline to my current JVC monitor via component? My footage is shot in 720p/24fps. I read somewhere that this card does not support 24p. Is this true?

I haven't used an Intensity Pro first hand so I can't say. I remember that 24p playback was not supported initially but I don't know if that problem has been resolved or not.

The Intensity Pro should work fine. It will not output a native 24p timeline, it adds pulldown and sends 720p60 to the monitor.

bbbmb is right. Also, the monitor you have is a pretty good one for SD work, but if you want to take advantage of it's component inputs, i suggest you seriously consider getting the corresponding i/o card (like the ones from AJA, BMD, etc).

How does the Intensity card connect to S-video? In all the photos I see of the break out cables.. all I see are RCA jacks!

If you go to Blackmagic's website and go to Support > Documentation, you can have a look at the Intensity manual. On pg27 you can see how to connect (i/o) to S-video. That, of course, is only applicable to the Intensity Pro's breakout cable, which is like 6in long...

Yeah, it's just an adapter, then you have to adjust your settings in the Mac's System Preferences (The IP card shows up there after install). Not sure if that will solve your problem though. I have been trying to monitor 1080P footage through the IP composite breakouts to an SD monitor and I get the still frames only as well, so I'm not sure it downconverts that way. For HD monitoring you might have to use the HDMI. But, I haven't messed with it too much.
