Monitor Resolution Set-Up

What CRT monitor resolution choice gives me the best quality viewing option while editing? (I realize that an external porfessinal monitor would be ideal...just don't have that kinda cash)

Computer monitors lie when it comes to what you'll see on a TV screen. But if you don't have cash for broadcast monitor, you can use some of the gamma correction settings to try and simulate TV but honestly it's so difficult to do color correction or make critical decisions with computer monitors. Don't mean to sound pessimistic but it's unfortunately the reality of the situation. For example, I've come across many threads where people were seeing a lot of artifacting in their DVD encodes but it turns out they hadn't watched it on a TV yet and when they did those problems went away. Until you get a broadcast one, I would suggest trying to calibrate your computer monitor the best you can and get a feeling for how it translates to what you see when you play something on a TV. It's kind of like in mixing audio on cheap speakers. At first, nothing seems to translate to other systems like car stereo, boom box, stereo system. But then you get a feeling for the speakers and know how to compensate for them and you can eventually get an okay mix.

Thanks Steve! I actually don't trust FCP or my monitor for color correction at all.
But as far as display monitor resolution numbers? There must be some standard to view DV footage the best possible...

I would think that you would want bto be at something like 1024x768 screen resolution. You want the FCP windows to fit the screen comfortably. I use 1280x1024 with my LCD screen. I assume this is what you were referring to when you said resolution.

S-Video cable coming out of my camera, which is connected to the computer via FW. Its amazing how much different it looks. I can't wait to get rid of my 2 giant ViewSonic CRT computer monitors and get some better ones (maybe the apple lcd monitors)
