Monitor Recommendations (Prod.)

What do you use?

Did a search here, but there were very few mentions of model numbers...and those that were mentioned don't seem to be being dumped thru ebay. :(

What should I be looking for, spec-wise? Underscan or 16:9/4:3 switchable, of course. But how many lines? And how big a screen?

Quick! before I realize Christmas is coming and put off buying one even longer. ;)

Re: Monitor Recommendations (Prod.)

Do you want to use it in the field, or in the studio? No one monitor really does both tasks well... studio monitors are big and heavy, my BT-H1390Y is about 60 pounds. Field monitors (like the Sony L3) are small and light, but the picture is much smaller...

Studio.

Since I am the entire crew for now, the only field monitor worth bothering with will be a teensy little one I can mount at the camera.

No one seems to have a 1380Y for sale on ebay at the moment. (It is one of the ones I looked for after gleaning the few model numbers in past posts)

Re: Monitor Recommendations (Prod.)

For studio use, you don't want a monitor smaller than 14". The 8' and 9" are good for field production, but would be really hard on your eyes for extended post production.

I've been using a Sony PVM-14L2 14": 4:3/16:9 switchable, blue only mode, and underscan. I've been quite pleased with it.

Lots of 13"-ers.

But how about a 14M2U? Looks good, spec-wise. Or the 14N6U?

Re: Monitor Recommendations (Prod.)

Just make sure it has underscan and blue only capabilities..otherwise pass it up. These monitors is only used for color correction and positioning purposes. Nothing more. So if the monitor is giving you an accurate reading then it will work in every television in the marketplace. Bottom line is it doesn't matter between 13 inch or 19 inchs it all depends on the look on the monitor and making sure your boom mike is not creaping into the shot.
