Monitor question...

Maybe it's silly...but I came across a Sony PVM-14L1 13-Inch Studio Monitor on a site & I'm wondering if it could be used in the field and not just at home.

Thanks.

Well, yeah, I guess, but it's kind of big & heavy for field work. Probably around 60 pounds, isn't it?

The standard for a field monitor is (or was) the 8045Q, which is an 8" monitor and can be powered off batteries if need be. The new model is the 9L3.

I have a PVM-14-series that I take along as a field monitor.

When circumstances accommodate something that large and heavy.

Sometimes it just winds up sitting in the trunk.

I'm getting a little varizoom lcd tft monitor, but I don't think it's going to be useful for much besides composition...

...Barry, can an lcd screen serve as a field q/c monitor?

A trick a lot of people are doing these days is using deep cycle marine batteries for their field monitors. they last all day and not nearly the cost of field monitor batteries which have to be swaped out every couple hours.

the most important feature fo a field monitor is 12 volt. :) unless you want to haul around a generator

I know that the PVM 14L1 doesn't have underscan...but would that truly be a problem during the shoot? We'll be shooting 16:9, using a DVX 100A, & editing in FCP 5...or possibly an older version of FCP...I'm not sure what the school has to offer yet.
I'm just looking to spend the least amount of $ for a monitor that'll suit my present needs...
Thanks!
