Monitor question: resolution 1050 or 1080

My question is: I can buy a much cheaper monitor (about 1/2 to 1/3 in Dell Models) for a monitor with resolution 1680x1050. It appears those are the Dell models up to 23".

The models 24" and higher step up resolution to 1900x1200 which will give the full HD resolution my HV20 can provide but the monitor costs twice as much or more.

I don't fully understand the technology involved in displaying images (down converting in a system with not enough resolution to display full HD). Can someone tell me the advantage of getting that larger monitor? If I get either I would probably get the 22" with less resolution or the 24" with HD resolution. I say this because it isn't the drastic a difference in screen size, just in resolution.

The HV20 records 1440x1080, not 1920x1080, so it's really not going to make much of a difference.

Besides, the Dells make horrible video monitors. They're computer monitors -- don't try to make them serve duty as a live video monitor.

Barry, thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate it and your feedback. To clarify about the resolution I meant since the 1680x1050 monitor is still short in the 1440x1080 resolution of the HV20 and any impact that may have on display.

I'm just curious about purchasing the best monitor that I can afford as I now am still on a 19" CRT from 5 years ago. I don't know the technicals behind how different video codecs eventually come to be displayed and would hate it if I bought the lesser resolution monitor only to find I wasted my money.

I believe my concern comes from something I read either about HD monitors or about HDTV televisions and that some had 1050 pixels instead of 1080 and those who bought the 1050 ones were misinformed. I'm trying not to make a misinformed purchase since I can't afford to replace it once it's bought.

Which also brings me to you other response about the poor quality of Dell monitors. I've read that here, though many members here seem to proud dell owners, but my understanding is everything better would be >$2000 if not $6000.

I need something to edit with and understand color timing would require something expensive. I definitely can't afford a $6000 monitor, I think i would go to a post house for timing if I made a film in that case. If I can't afford something good do you recommend I stick with my crappy CRT?
